Shark Week debuted in the summer of 1988 and in the decades since, has become an annual summer tradition with real scientific impact. Each July or August, the Discovery Channel dedicates a week of primetime programming to one of nature’s most misunderstood, feared, mythologized creatures.Entertainment programming has always been part of Shark Week, too, with scripted movies like ‘Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives’. In the era of social media, Shark Week has exploded into something far larger than its basic cable beginnings. Shark Week hosts have varied over the years: Eli Roth hosted 2015-2017 and in 2018, its 30th anniversary, the Shark Week host was NBA hall-of-famer and shark enthusiast Shaquille O’Neal. “Shark week I mean SHAQ WEEK starts in ten minutes, don’t miss it,” O’Neal commented Twitter on the week’s first night, alongside a photo of of him swimming with sharks.
