Mark Hamill Will Play Luke Skywalker in New Piece of 'Star Wars' Canon

Lucasfilm

Even though Luke Skywalker becomes one with the Force at the end of The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill will again play the famous Star Wars hero. Only this time, Hamill is returning to play young Luke Skywalker. The next season of the animated series Star Wars: Forces of Destiny will feature the return of Hamill as Luke. And, yes, this will be 100 percent canon.

On Friday, Lucasfilm and Disney announced that their popular anthology series Forces of Destiny will return for a series of new short adventures. Here are the official descriptions of all the episodes in the new season.

“Hasty Departure” — Hera and Sabine liberate an Imperial shuttle only to find they have unexpected cargo: troopers!
“Unexpected Company” — Upset when Ahsoka joins a mission set for just he and Padmé, Anakin puts them on a dangerous path. Working alongside the secret couple, Ahsoka helps save the day.
“Shuttle Shock” — On their approach to Canto Bight, Finn and Rose learn to work together to navigate a pod of dangerous creatures.
“Jyn’s Trade” Jyn helps a young thief learn a valuable lesson.
“Run Rey Run” — While scavenging inside a Star Destroyer, Rey is cornered by competition on the hunt for a valuable part.
“Bounty Hunted” — Maz Kanata helps Leia, Chewbacca and R2-D2 with a clever plan to free Han from Jabba the Hutt.
“The Path Ahead” — Training with Master Yoda in the swamps of Dagobah, Luke learns an important lesson.
“Porg Problems” — Rey has her training interrupted by some very mischievous porgs.
Talent from across Star Wars films and TV reprise their roles — Mark Hamill (Luke), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose), Tiya Sircar (Sabine), Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka), Vanessa Marshall (Hera), Catherine Taber (Padmé) and Matt Lanter (Anakin), among others.

Maz is now part of 'Return of the Jedi' canon.

Notably, this is the first time Mark Hamill has played the voice of Luke in an official Star Wars cartoon since the Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978. The last time Hamill’s voice was heard on a canonical Star Wars cartoon was in the final season of The Clone Wars, for which Hamill played the voice of the spirit of an evil Sith Lord named Darth Bane.

This season of Forces of Destiny also differs from the previous season insofar as every episode last time focused specifically on female Star Wars heroes. This time, Luke and Finn are crashing the party.

It also looks like Maz Kanata’s connection to Han Solo will be retconned as she’s clearly seen meeting Leia and Chewie before they head into Jabba’s Palace in disguise. In the old expanded-universe Legends canon, the story of how Leia and Chewie got their disguises was told in Shadows of the Empire.

The new season of Forces of Destiny will debut on Monday, March 19 on the Disney YouTube Channel. Another Forces of Destiny special will air on March 25 on the Disney Channel.
