'Ghostbusters 2020': Release Date, Cast, and Plot for the Paranormal Romp

A new generation will answer the Ghostbusters' call.

There’s something strange in the neighborhood and a new generation of Ghostbusters are going to look into it for us. Back in January 2019, we learned that a new Ghostbusters film, currently titled Ghostbusters 2020, got the greenlight. It looks like this popular film franchise is expanding yet again, but what do we really know about it?

The first Ghostbusters arrived on the scene in 1984. Starring Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Annie Potts, Sigourney Weaver, and Rick Moranis, the film followed a team of parapsychologist-entrepreneurs who started a ghost-catching business in New York City. It was a hit, spawning a sequel (1989’s criminally underrated Ghostbusters II) and a reboot in 2016 starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig. A third Ghostbusters film has been talked about for years but to no avail. Now, it looks like things have changed, as production on the film gets underway.

One key thing we know is that Ghostbusters 2020 will ignore the reboot and pick up the story right where Ghostbusters II left off. But there are so many other details to look over.

So, here’s everything we know so far about the next chapter of the Ghostbusters franchise, including information on the release date, director, trailer, and how the story will be inherited and updated for a new generation.

Jason Reitman will direct. Reitman’s previous work as a director includes Up in the Air, Juno, Young Adult, Tully, and The Front Runner (among other projects). Reitman is the son of director Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two Ghostbusters films in the mid- to late ‘80s. Ivan will serve as an executive producer on his son’s forthcoming Ghostbusters film.

What Is the Plot of Ghostbusters 2020?

The broad strokes of Ghostbusters 2020 have been revealed but when it comes to the finer points, we’re still in the dark. The Ghostbusters 2020 plot, as reported in Variety, revolves around a single mother and her two children.

In the 2020 Ghostbusters movie, a family — played by Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and McKenna Grace — moves to a new home and discovers a connection to the original Ghostbusters team. Past this exciting, if not succinct, synopsis, we’ve got nada.
