'Jumanji 3: Next Level' Release Date, Plot, and Cast for the New Adventure

Welcome (back) to the jungle.

On an unassuming Monday in July, the first trailer for the upcoming Jumanji film, Jumanji: The Next Level landed in our laps. This will be the third film in what has become a successful franchise after 2017’s Jumanji rebooted the 1995 Robin Williams classic.

Based on a picture book, the Jumanji is simple but intriguing: A magical game has the ability to transport jungle creatures and even full environments into our world (or pull players into its world). The original Jumanji followed this to a T, while Welcome to the Jungle flipped the script and transported its teenage protagonists into the actual jungles of Jumanji, also replacing the board game with an archaic video game console.

Now, The Next Level will return to the jungle of Jumanji for another truly wild ride. With little known about the various aspects of the film, let’s take a look at what we do know, from cast to plot to release date for Jumaji 3.

When Is the Jumanji 3: The Next Level Release Date?

Jumanji: The Next Level will be released December 13, 2019 in theaters everywhere.

Is There a Trailer For Jumanji 3: The Next Level?

The first full-length trailer was released on July 1, 2019. You can watch the trailer above, which clocks in at more than two minutes and gives us a decent look at the next thrilling adventure inside the Jumanji video game from Welcome to the Jungle.

Who Directed Jumanji 3: The Next Level?

Jake Kasdan, who directed Welcome to the Jungle is back on board for The Next Level. Kasdan has been working in film and television for more than a decade, racking up credits on movies and TV shows like Sex Tape, New Girl, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, and Freaks and Geeks. The name “Kasdan” may ring a bell when it comes to adventurous films because Jake’s father, Lawrence Kasdan, is the screenwriter behind Raiders of the Lost Ark, Return of the Jedi, The Empire Strikes Back, Silverado, Wyatt Earp, and much more.

  • Alex Wolff as “Spencer”
  • Ser’Darius Blain as “Fridge”
  • Madison Iseman as “Bethany”
  • Morgan Turner as “Martha”
  • Dwayne Johnson as “Smolder Bravestone”
  • Kevin Hart as “Mouse Finbar”
  • Jack Black as “Shelley Oberon”
  • Karen Gillan as “Ruby Roundhouse”
  • Nick Jonas as “Seaplane McDonough”

Who Are the Newbies in Jumanji 3: The Next Level’s Cast?

While a majority of the returning cast will include key characters from Welcome to the Jungle, there will be some exciting new additions too. As revealed in the trailer, Danny Devito, Danny Glover, and Awkwafina will join The Next Level. It’s revealed in the trailer that DeVito will be playing Spencer’s grandfather, Grandpa Anthony, and Glover will be playing Anthony’s friend, Milo. Awkwafina’s character name and details have yet to be revealed.

What Is the Plot of Jumanji 3: The Next Level?

Despite confirmation that a majority of the cast would be returning for Jumanji: The Next Level, the plot of the sequel has remained largely under wraps. Or, it was under wraps until the first trailer dropped at the beginning of July.

It’s revealed in the trailer that Spencer (Wolff) is attempting to repair the Jumanji video game after it was somehow broken between Welcome to the Jungle and The Next Level. Spencer’s friends — Fridge, Bethany, and Martha — come over to Spencer’s house one day looking for him, first meeting Spencer’s grandpa, Anthony (DeVito), and Anthony’s friend, Milo (Glover). The teens discover Spencer has somehow been sucked back into the Jumanji game and choose to go into the game to find him. What they don’t realize is that somehow, Anthony and Milo have followed the teens into the game and are now playing too.

The trailer also shows that Spencer and Bethany have not dropped back into their original avatars of Smolder Bravestone (Johnson) and Shelley Oberon (Black). There’s been some shuffling around and now, the avatar lineup in The Next Level is: Anthony as Smolder Bravestone; Milo as Mouse Finbar; Fridge as Shelley Oberon; and Martha as Ruby Roundhouse. Now,the quartet of heroes have to find Spencer and Bethany who have landed in other Jumanji characters’ bodies.

Will There Be Any Easter Egg References to 1995’s Jumanji?

Welcome to the Jungle did a slick job of tipping its cap to the first Jumanji film when it revealed that the hideout used by Seaplane McDonough was actually the homestead the young Alan Parrish built when he got stuck in Jumanji in the 1960s. The film was also set in the New England town of Brantford, the same town as Jumanji.

It’s unclear if The Next Level will continue to give sly nods to its ‘90s predecessor, but we’d be surprised if it didn’t include at least a few Easter eggs.
