The bad guys are teaming up in the new trailer for Glass. The third movie in M. Night Shyamalan’s original superhero series will culminate as “The Horde” (James McAvoy) and “Mr. Glass” (Samuel L. Jackson) team up to break out of their confinement inside a mental institution.
On Thursday, Universal released the second trailer for Glass, set for release in theaters in January. Aside from the return of McAvoy, Jackson, and Bruce Willis as retired security guard David Dunn, the film introduces Sarah Paulson as Dr. Ellie Staple, a psychiatrist who treats patients who believe they are superhumans (and they’re kind of right).
A culmination of a story nearly 20 years in the making, Glass will unite the stories first told in 2000’s Unbreakable and in 2017’s Split. As the Horde and Mr. Glass team up, David Dunn steps up to stop them both.
Also returning to the universe is Anya Taylor Joy’s Casey Cooke, a lonely teenaged girl who survived her kidnapping by “Kevin” in Split, and Spencer Treat Clark, who played David Dunn’s son Joseph in Unbreakable.
Arriving years before the superhero movie boom (and certainly before the Marvel Cinematic Universe), M. Night Shyamalan deconstructed the superhero story into a gritty, cerebral thriller in Unbreakable. Years later, Shyamalan followed up with Split, which wasn’t even marketed as a sequel to Unbreakable but was revealed in the film’s credits scenes.
The trailer for Glass is less cerebral than the other two movies, but in this age of the cinematic superhero universe, Glass seems it’ll do all it can to stand out.
Glass will be released in theaters in January 2019.
