At the end of June, Epic Games held a one-time Fortnite event involving a rocket launch that created a giant crack in the sky. This started a chain reaction causing portals to appear across the island, which led to Fortnite Season 5’s launch on Thursday. On Friday, players looked to the giant crack in the sky and saw what appears to be sand flowing from it. One Reddit user posted a screenshot of the phenomenon on the Fortnite subreddit. As expected, there are multiple theories on what’s going on.
Pyramids in Dusty Divot
Since the theme of Fortnite Season 5 is “Worlds Collide” and various historic objects appeared on the island, most players believe Egyptian pyramids will appear. Some also took note that the sand appears to be coming down on Dusty Divot, which is now covered in trees. Sand could fill in the area and at some point, pyramids may fall from the sky, leading to the next storyline event.
Prior to the start of Fortnite Season 5, data miner TwoEpicBuddies posted a video of the island covered in sand. There were some players skeptical about the footage, citing the new terrain as a graphics error on the part of the game engine, but this new change does give their video some credibility.
Bye-Bye Loot Lake
Another theory is the sand will fill Loot Lake. The body of water is not a favorite among players as they have to either use resources to build a platform across the lake, slowly wade through it, or take the long way around. By filling in the lake with sand, it will create a new battleground for players.
While this is a subtle change to Fortnite, it does show how Epic Games stepped up the storyline events for Season 5 by starting the day after the starts of the new season rather than mid-season. Players should expect more of these changes for the next 10 weeks.
