Fox’s new series, The Gifted, is set in the X-Men universe, but it’s not immune to the weird continuity issues the franchise always deals with. The show follows everyday Mutants rather than heroes, focusing specifically on a suburban family on the run with their two mutant kids, with only a few big name Mutants like Blink and Polaris making appearances. But, X-Men fans can’t help but wonder: Will the most popular Mutant of all, the Best at What He Does, make an appearance in The Gifted?
Was Wolverine in the Season Finale of The Gifted?
Was Wolverine Mentioned in the Season Finale of The Gifted?
Were the X-Men Mentioned in the Season Finale of The Gifted?
Yes, they were, although fans who were hoping that the season finale of The Gifted would definitively explain where the X-Men went are going to be seriously disappointed. If anything, the finale was all about setting up the Underground and the Hellfire Club as ersatz X-Men and Brotherhood substitutes.
We learn that Blink used to do odd jobs for the Brotherhood, the extremist, largely villainous mutant team lead by Magneto. Magneto isn’t mentioned by name, but he’s for sure Polaris’s dad, and we see her playing with his “M” logo that he gave his daughter when she was 13. Blink, who claims to have some pretty bad mutant ancestors as well, tries to convince Polaris not to follow in her father’s footsteps, but it doesn’t work.
So, that’s where Season 1 leaves us, with a diminished Underground squaring off against the Hellfire Club. And, as one of the Cuckoos notes, the Brotherhood left the Club with “more than a pat on the back and some encouraging words.”
Why are the X-Men basically “an urban legend now,” as Polaris says when talking to Evangeline Whedon, a mutant lawyer who can turn into a dragon? Well, maybe we’ll find out next season.
