Bleak New 'Logan' Photo Makes a Sad Child Out of Laura

Wolverine is going to have a companion along for his tear through the Southwest in Logan. A young mutant, Laura (Dafne Keen), will kick Reaver ass alongside Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Patrick Stewart’s elderly Charles Xavier. In a new photo posted on Jackman’s Twitter account with the caption, “Waiting,” Laura rides a supermarket horse in a dreary black-and-white picture. Laura is, of course, just a child, but the bleak atmosphere indicates Laura still wants to be a kid in spite of her bloodlust.

It’s a common trope for movies of this sort. The loss of innocence, especially in children, are often explored in books and films like Lord of the Flies, Stand By Me, and Pan’s Labyrinth. The noir film The Road to Perdition was inspired by the Japanese manga Lone Wolf & Cub about a wandering samurai and his child, which also served as a template for Logan.

Logan, directed by James Mangold, has set itself up to be a drastically different X-Men film than ever seen before. With a collection of black-and-white photos and a moody trailer set to Johnny Cash’s slow cover of “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails, Logan is not looking like a typical superhero blockbuster from either Marvel or 20th Century Fox. And it isn’t violent in the smarmy way like last year’s Deadpool, which is on the inexplicable road to the Academy Awards.

Check out the tweet below featuring Laura on the most depressing horsey ride imaginable.

Logan will be released March 3.
