'Spider-Man: Far From Home' Easter egg teases 'Avengers 5: Secret Wars'

This fits with something else the Russo brothers keep saying.

Spider-Man will swing back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in July 2021, but that’s not his only legally mandated appearance in the MCU. Disney and Sony’s new contract reportedly leaves room for one additional Marvel movie, and a recently spotted Easter egg in Spider-Man: Far From Home may reveal that Spidey’s movie could wind up being Avengers 5: Secret Wars.

As fans continue to watch and rewatch Far From Home, new details pop up. The latest comes from the jet scene, where Peter Parker designs a new suit while Led Zeppelin AC/DC blares over the speaker system. As Peter scrolls through a gallery of potential outfits, the camera lingers on several options. On Reddit, u/ak2sup re-shared the image while attempting to match each suit to its comic book equivalent.

The costume on the far right is by far the most interesting; u/ak2sup suggests that it bears a strong resemblance to Spider-Man’s outfit in the “Secret Wars” crossover comic book event, and we kind of agree. For context, here’s a look at the Secret Wars costume option you can unlock in the recent Spider-Man game for the PS4.

It’s also worth noting that the Russo brothers (the director duo behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Endgame) have repeatedly said they’d only return to Marvel for a few movies, with Secret Wars being at the top of that list. They’re also interested in X-Men.

So all signs seem to be pointing towards a Secret Wars adaptation in the MCU, and considering the scope of that story, it feels like the only way to tell it would be under the Avengers umbrella.

Originally imagined as a way to sell more toys, Secret Wars was one of Marvel Comics’ first big crossover events. The 1980s story followed dozens of popular heroes and villains as they were transported across the universe and forced to fight each other for survival. Marvel also resurrected the series in 2015, using it to connect its multiverse and bring Miles Morales into the main continuity.

In other words, Secret Wars could be a huge deal for the MCU, introducing new characters and shaking up any pre-existing dynamics. But before you get too excited, there are two things to remember:

1. Avengers 5 isn’t coming for a very long time. Our most optimistic estimates put it at the end of Marvel’s Phase Five in May 2024.

2. That might not be Secret Wars Spider-Man at all. As one commenter pointed out, it also looks a bit like the Spider-Armor that Peter Parker sometimes wears. In which case, Far From Home might not be teasing Avengers 5: Secret Wars at all, though that doesn’t mean it still can’t happen…
