'Westworld' Season 3 Trailer Teases Answers to the Man in Black Mystery

What happened to the Man in Black?!?

by Jake Kleinman

Westworld Season 3 may take us beyond the park to a futuristic dystopia where robots and humans coexist, but a new trailer released at San Diego Comic-Con also confirms that we’ll be returning to Delos Parks to solve one of the biggest mysteries from Season 2: That huge cliffhanger for the Man in Black.

It’s been a while since Westworld Season 2, but you may remember that the finale ended with a post-credits scene set in the distant future. The “Forge,” a secret lab where the Delos corporation tried to transplant human minds into Host bodies, was in ruins, but the Man in Black (Ed Harris) was still there. It turned out he’d been transplanted into a Host himself and was being run on a loop to test of “fidelity.”

It was a huge cliffhanger, and in a post-season finale interview with The Hollywood Reporter, series co-creator Lisa Joy revealed that Westworld Season 3 might not provide any answers about the Man in Black’s fate. After confirming that the Season 2 finale’s post credits scene took place in the distant future, Joy hinted: “Season three, the main story, will not be leaping forward that far.”

“It’s teasing for us another temporal realm that one day we’re working toward,” she continued, “and one day will see a little bit more of, and how they get to that place, and what they’re testing for.”

That seemed like a clue that the show was in no rush to explain what had happened to the Man in Black, even if Joy left enough room for the possibility that one of the Season 3 plotlines (because you know there will be multiple timelines) cold take place in that far-flung future.

He's back!

HBO

But this Westworld Season 3 trailer doesn’t hesitate to show the Man in Black, essentially confirming that Ed Harris will return in some capacity, even if it’s a limited one. And he fact that he’s looking up only makes us more confident that the new season will explore his adventures within the Forge, and maybe even what the rest of this world looks like in the distant future.

Westworld Season 3 is set to debut on HBO in 2020.
