There are eight films nominated to win Best Picture at the 2019 Academy Awards. Following an impressive 94 percent score in predicting last year’s Oscars, a San Francisco-based technology firm, thinks it has correctly predicted the winner for Sunday night’s show.

Unanimous A.I. uses what it calls “Swarm A.I.” technology to create an artificial intelligence comprised of a hive-mind of dozens of movie enthusiasts. The firm regularly predicts the results for the World Cup, NFL games, politics, and even Game of Thrones plot lines. This week, it shared the results of its 2019 Oscar predictions with Inverse.

To predict the winners of the 2019 Academy Awards, Unanimous A.I. created a “swarm” of 38 movie fans who worked together as a hive mind to make their prediction. As the animations below show, each participant logs on to the Unanimous A.I. website, and controls a golden magnet, using it to drag a puck toward the result they think is the most likely outcome.

This is where it gets interesting: As a user sees the puck move toward a particular decision, it triggers a psychological response. They might readjust their thinking as the group builds toward a consensus. It’s an artificial intelligence, produced by human brains, working together as a group, similar to how a swarm of bees selects the perfect location for a hive. This TED Talk by Unanimous A.I. founder Louis Rosenberg, Ph.D., goes into further detail about this fascinating application of technology and the human brain.
