Goodbye Batfleck, hello Battinson? As DC’s new The Batman movie cruises towards a 2021 release date, we’ve learned a bit more about the upcoming film from Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, the Planet of the Apes prequels).
Back in January, Reeves shared some exciting details about the plot, cast, and release date with The Hollywood Reporter, — subsequently confirmed by Deadline — but in May we might have finally learned the answer to the question everyone cares about: Who will play Batman next?
Here’s everything we know about Matt Reeves’s upcoming The Batman movie, from the proposed release date to who will don the pointy ears.
Wait, who’s playing Batman?
On May 16, Variety reported that DC was set to cast Robert Pattinson as the young version of Batman we’re expecting to see in the 2021 movie. However, The Wrap quickly followed that up with a report that the role was still up in the air and Nicholas Hoult was in the running along with Pattinson.
So for now, we still don’t know exactly who will play the Caped Crusader, but between Hoult and Pattinson it’s easy to see a pattern starting to emerge.
As for the rest of the cast, we really have no idea what to expect. We’ve been told that The Batman won’t be set within the DC Extended Universe (Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Justice League, etc). We’re also not expecting a crossover with October’s Joker. So we probably won’t see any familiar faces, but it looks like DC is looking to cast some major talent for this movie, so stay tuned.
When is The Batman release date?
This Batman movie will swoop into theaters on June 25, 2021. That’s going to be a busy summer for DC, with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad releasing on August 6 and DC Super Pets (likely an animated movie) on May 21.
Is there a The Batman trailer?
Not yet, and you probably shouldn’t hold your breath. Reeves is still casting the main role, but according to Variety pre-production is expected to kick off this summer. It’s possible we could get a behind-the-scenes sneak peek around then, but don’t expect an official trailer for a long time.
What’s the plot of The Batman?
We don’t know, but according to Reeves we can expect a movie that’s anchored by the character and focuses more on his abilities as a detective. Here’s what he told THR:
It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.
You can also expect to see a variety of villains, or as Reeves puts it, “There will be a Rogues Gallery.”
Is it really called The Batman?
Maybe. According to Reeves, that’s the working title but things could change.
“What it will be called ultimately, I don’t know,” he said.
The Batman (or whatever it’s called) is expected in 2021.
