The Handmaid’s Tale didn’t win big at the 2018 Emmy Awards, but, earlier that night on the red carpet, Hulu’s near-dystopian series still managed to make headlines. Speaking to the press, one of the show’s lead actors revealed a pretty big spoiler for Handmaid’s Tale Season 3.
Spoilers for Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 ahead.
It turns out that Aunt Lydia is still alive — according to Ann Dowd, who plays the evil matriarch in Handmaid’s Tale — USA Today reports.
“She is alive. This I know,” Dowd said, adding that she’s officially allowed to reveal that information.
She continued to explain that beyond simply surviving the attack, Aunt Lydia’s fate is still entirely up in the air. She could be gravely injured, or she just could just walk it off in Handmaid’s Tale Season 3.
“I’ve been told it’s OK to say,” Dowd said. “I don’t know one other thing about her. I don’t know what shape she’s in, but she is alive.”
In case you need a quick refresher, at the end of Season 2, Aunt Lydia was stabbed and pushed down a flight of stairs by Alexis Bledel’s character (Emily), suggesting that the cruel Handmaids guardian might have actually died. But now we know that she’ll return for Season 3, and it won’t just be in a flashback.
As for when Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 will actually air, that much is a mystery. Hulu announced the show’s renewal back in May, adding that its audience had doubled in Season 2. The series also expanded from 10 episodes in Season 1 to 13 episodes in Season 2. So it’s possible we could get even more Handmaid’s Tale when Season 3 arrives in 2019.
Traditionally, Handmaid’s Tale premieres in the spring and runs through early summer. So you can probably expect to see Season 3 arrive right around that time next year.
