Comic-Con 2018: Matt Groening Experiments With Fantasy in 'Disenchantment'

Same art style, same comedy style.

Almost a year ago, Netflix announced a new series from The Simpsons and Futurama creator Matt Groening called Disenchantment. The first full trailer for the show made its debut during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, and it’s full of the kind of humor expected from Groening.

The trailer for Disenchantment went up on Saturday during the show’s panel at the San Diego Comic Con. Taking place in the kingdom of Dreamland, the show focuses on Princess Bean voiced by Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) who doesn’t want to be the stereotypical princess. She’s joined by an elf named Elfo and a “personal demon” called Luci, who are played by Nat Faxon (Tammy, Friends From College) and Eric Andre (The Eric Andre Show) respectively. Other notable voice actors and regulars on Groening’s other shows, John DiMaggio and Billy West, will also lend their voices to the show.

Disenchantment is a bit of an experiment for Groening. “This show is basically us trying to see if we can create a new universe and play with it,” he said during Saturday’s panel according to SyFy.

Not only is the medieval setting of the show in a time period he hasn’t dealt with previously considering The Simpsons is based in the present and Futurama in the future, but the new series has a serialized storyline for its 10-episode run. It will also be the first of his shows with a female lead and will play up the Disney princess tropes.

Disenchantment will begin streaming on Netflix on August 17. Animation for the show was done by Rough Draft Studios, the same studio who animated Futurama.

Another animated Netflix show that was shown at the San Diego Comic Con was Voltron Legendary Defender. At its panel on Friday, there was an interesting reveal about one of the main characters of the show.
