Marvel Entertainment

If you’ve been watching the trailers for Avengers: Infinity War, releasing April 27, and wondering where in Jack Kirby’s green Earth is Hawkeye, wonder no longer. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have assured fans that Hawkeye’s absence will be explained.

On Thursday, in the latest issue of Total Film magazine (via GamesRadar+), Anthony Russo said Hawkeye’s absence is actually part of the story. “All will be explained when people see the movie,” he said in regards to Jeremy Renner’s Marvel hero. “It’s all tied into the story.”

Total Film however did confirm that Hawkeye is in Avengers: Infiniy War and that he’s sporting a new mohawk hairstyle. Considering Hawkeye is married with kids, that might be an odd look.

Along with Ant-Man, Hawkeye has been MIA from almost all promotional materials for Infinity War. (Fans on Reddit recently believed they found Ant-Man on the IMAX poster for Infinity War, but it’s unlikely.) Since his appearance in 2011’s Thor, Jeremy Renner has played the character throughout the Marvel film franchise, who functions in a more black-ops/tactics realm than someone like Thor or Iron Man. After 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Hawkeye retired, but the events of Captain America: Civil War dragged him back into the game.

The last known whereabouts for the bow-wielding Avenger was at the Raft, a super prison for enhanced humans seen in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. By violating the Sokovia Accords and aiding the fugitive Steve Rogers, Hawkeye was confined to a cell. That’s not the place for any family man to be.

Whether or not Hawkeye is in Infinity War, he will definitely appear in the untitled Avengers 4 in 2019. Actor Jeremy Renner was seen on the film’s set in costume during production.

Avengers: Infinity War will be released on April 27.
