‘Rick and Morty’ Reveals the Importance of Szechuan Sauce to S3

It's not.

Adult Swim

The Rick and Morty live stream on Thursday night was pretty much the lightly organized mess that fans expected it would be — in a good way. Show creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland riffed off each other, answered some burning questions, and finally revealed when Season 3 will premiere. Oh, and we got a Season 3 trailer.

But the most important question of the night might have been the first question asked by fans almost two hours into the session with Harmon and Roiland: Will we see more Szechuan sauce in Season 3? Will Rick finally achieve his goal?

The answer: an unsurprising ¯_(ツ)_/¯

“I have no idea,” Roiland said, laughing. “It was a joke.”

Harmon went on to explain that his partner in crime and inappropriate humor, Roiland, has “a kind of obsessive consumer side to him” and walked into the office one day ranting about the sauce.

“It was a real life story that I fucking love that sauce,” Roiland says, with Harmon backing him up: “You truly believe that that sauce is the best-tasting sauce.”

Szechuan sauce, for those of you fans who, somehow, haven’t seen the premiere episode of Season 3 that aired as an April Fool’s Day surprise, was a big part of Season 3 Episode 1, “The Rickshank Rickdemption.” Rick swore up and down that getting more McDonald’s Szechuan sauce was his new life goal, and that the entirety of the third season would be set around that fucking sauce.

The internet, of course, was overrun by Szechuan sauce after that. People started trying to buy it on eBay, harassing McDonald’s online to bring it back, and scrounging up homemade recipes for the Mulan-themed plum sauce.

Turns out that was all for nothing, guys!

But, uh, hey: at least Season 3 of Rick and Morty premieres on Adult Swim on July 30.
