At this depressing time — when we know that the former FBI director is about to testify that the president lied to the country — it can be hard to keep one’s spirits up. James Comey’s opening statement to the Senate Intelligence Committee is unsettling, but at least it’s brought a bountiful supply of hilarious Twitter reactions to keep us sane.

In the darkest of times, one can count on the internet to turn on the light.

There’s something to be said for taking a distressing, serious piece of legal testimony and treating it like juicy drama (especially when its content is so bizarre):

Rightfully, Twitter has been delving deeply into the uncomfortable stare Comey described between himself and the president: “I didn’t move, speak, or change my facial expression in any way during the awkward silence […]. We simply looked at each other in silence.”

Brimful of strange cloud metaphors and demands for loyalty, the statement is obvious fodder for memes. And Twitter did not disappoint:
