'Power Rangers' Movie Gets One Step Closer to Green Ranger

Lionsgate, Saban Brands

It’s just the beginning for Saban’s Power Rangers, a reboot of the TV and toy phenomenon from the ‘90s and directed by Dean Israelite — but the film is already working to set up sequels. A popular fan theory surrounding Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) involves her origins as the legendary Green Ranger, which has been reinforced in a new TV spot that premiered this week.

In a new 30-second spot advertising the film, Banks’s Rita Repulsa gets up close with the Yellow Ranger, Trini (Becky G), taunting her: “Do you know who I am? I was once just like you. Full of hope.”

Rita’s words allude to a more hopeful past as a Power Ranger, which fans speculate based on her form-fitting green armor. In the TV show, Rita Repulsa was the galaxy’s most feared sorceress who waged war with Zordon, the guardian of good in the universe. But the new film sounds like it’s rewriting the two magicians — even Zordon, as actor Bryan Cranston might have spoiled — as ex-Power Rangers engaging in a more personal grudge match.

Rita’s more ominous words heard in the previous trailer, “I’ve killed Rangers before,” is repeated in the new spot. This hints that Rita might have betrayed her fellow comrades, including Zordon, in pursuit of greater power. Said power might be the Zeo Crystal, which has been revealed to be in the film if you take the time to chat with Alpha 5 on Facebook.

Saban’s Power Rangers will be released on March 24.
