Lifelong rivals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul are set to duel it out once again, but this time, Obi-Wan Kenobi will steal Darth Maul’s voice.
The final episodes of the third season of Star Wars Rebels will reveal an animated version of Old Ben Kenobi voiced by Stephen Stanton, an actor who has also voiced Darth Maul in the past. Additionally, Stanton created the voice of the Mon Calamari Admiral Raddus in Rogue One, meaning that he’s the person in Rogue One who says the words “Rogue One” the most.
In fact, Stephen Stanton’s voice resume for Star Wars is impressive … most impressive. He’s voiced Obi-Wan before and at the same time voiced Darth Maul in the Star Wars: Battlefront II video game. He’s also taken on Mas Amedda in Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series as well as Admiral Wilhuff Tarkin in Clone Wars and Rebels.
The trailer for the mid season premiere reveals that Maul will sneak up behind Old Ben while he’s in hiding on Tatooine and tending a fire. Their duel will most likely take place right then and there, following the story of the previously non-canon Star Wars story “Old Wounds.”
Stanton has been praised for his spot-on impression of Sir Alec Guinness, the original actor behind Old Ben Kenobi in A New Hope in 1977, and the mid season trailer absolutely supports that.
The addition of Obi-Wan continues Rebels’s reputation for reintroducing old faces. Ahsoka Tano, Rex, and Maul were crowd-pleasers, and the addition of Obi-Wan and Saw Gerrera will undoubtedly be greeted with the same amount of fervor.
Lately, Darth Maul (or just “Maul” as he goes by now) has been voiced by Sam Witwer, meaning Stephen Stanton will (sadly) not be dueling with himself.
Be on the lookout for Stanton’s version of Old Ben as he squares off against Witwer’s Maul when the final episodes of Season 3 of Star Wars Rebels premiere January 7.
