Start reaching for your fleece blanket, your snifter of brandy, and your wool socks. And don’t forget to cue the Game of Thrones jokes, because winter is coming. But if you’re in the Midwest, it already arrived hand-in-hand with Winter Storm Bella, which dumped over a foot of of snow in some places on November 20 and 21.

While it’s 50 and sunny in most places across the continental U.S., states from South Dakota to Michigan have been mired in a snowy mess. Some people went to bed and woke up with an extra half inch on their cars, while others found their patio furniture under a thick blanket of that white stuff. In fact, the 5.4 inches of snow at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport clocks in at the fourth-biggest snowfall on record for November in the area.
