For a long time, Star Wars fans have speculated that Naomi Ackie’s Jannah would be revealed to be Finn’s sister in The Rise of Skywalker. While that’s seeming less likely given recent reveals, she may share another connection with the former stormtrooper. According to an intriguing new Star Wars leak, Jannah has a key connection to not one, but two main characters. Let’s dissect.
Possible spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
The details surrounding Jannah’s backstory remain a mystery, but director J.J. Abrams has said her past will be explored in Episode IX, and it seems her role in the film is more closely connected to beloved characters than previously believed. Making Star Wars editor Jason Ward just revealed that she has past ties with both Finn and Lando Calrissian.
Per MSW, Lando will tell Finn that the First Order kidnapped his daughter years ago early on in Episode IX. This hits Finn hard because he was also taken by the First Order as a youngster and brainwashed into being a loyal stormtrooper. (This information is revealed in the game Star Wars: Battlefront II.) Enter Jannah, who is later revealed to be Lando’s daughter in a scene “similar to Han Solo’s realization that Luke is Leia’s brother in Return of the Jedi.”
Jason Ward elaborated:
In the film, Lando comments that his daughter was taken. A short time later that daughter finds the heroes on Kef Bir/Endor. The way that it plays out is quick and not heavy.
Presumably, no one will say it out loud, but when Jannah gives the coordinates to her home sector, Lando will realize she’s his daughter because he also lives there. As underwhelming as that may sound, learning Jannah is Lando’s long-lost daughter at least works to explain more about his role in The Rise of Skywalker.
More interestingly, however, is Jannah’s connection to Finn. At some point during the film, Jannah explains her abduction and past life as a stormtrooper after joining the Resistance mission against the First Order. Numerous fan theories already predicted that Jannah was a former stormtrooper. One even suggested that she and Finn would lead the stormtroopers in a mass defection from the First Order. The latest MSW leak seems to lend credence to these ideas.
It’s not clear yet whether Finn and Jannah’s shared history will lead to even more reveals, but it certainly helps to helps to explain why they’ve been consistently shown fighting alongside one another in several images from Episode IX.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters December 20.
