'Terminator: Dark Fate' Trailer 2: 5 Spoilers From the Comic-Con Footage

One new character in particular plays a very important role.

SAN DIEGO — He said he’d be back, and it turns out he was telling the truth. Terminator: Dark Fate is set to reboot the franchise (or is it a retcon?) later this year, and at San Diego Comic Con 2019, a packed panel featuring the cast and director for the sixth (!) Terminator movie included plenty of spoilers and other exciting new details.

Here’s five big reveals about Terminator: Dark Fate that we heard at the official Comic-Con panel. Consider yourself warned, there are Terminator spoilers ahead.

5. John Connor (Edward Furlong) Is Back for Terminator: Dark Fate

One of the first things revealed at the SDCC panel was that the original Terminator 2 actor who played Sarah Connor’s son John will return. While he wasn’t present at the panel, Edward Furlong’s involvement was confirmed by James Cameron, who Skyped in from the set of “Avatar 2, 3, and 4” to kickoff the event.

Furlong didn’t appear in the exclusive footage shown at the Comic-Con panel either, so we have no idea what his role will be in Terminator: Dark Fate. Still, it’s exciting to hear that this cinematic reunion will include one more member of the Connor family.

4. No Multiple Realities in the Terminator Universe

Terminator: Dark Fate picks up where T2 left off, ignoring all the movies that came afterwards, but that doesn’t mean you should expect any reality-bending shenanigans.

“Time travel with multiple realities loses some stakes,” said director Tim Miller. “In Terminator there is only one timeline.”

So it sounds like Dark Fate won’t attempt to retcon the more recent movies out of existence. Instead, it will simply ignore them to imagine a different version of the world that was set in motion at the end of Terminator 2.

3. Natalia Reyes Could Be the Key to the Entire Thing

In a cast full of newcomers, Natalia Reyes may be the most significant. She plays a relatively unassuming woman from Mexico City who gets wrapped up in the latest Terminator adventure after a new robot shows up to kill her.

“One day I got to work and suddenly there’s this new terminator trying to kill me,” she told the Comic-Con crowd.

Later, after the new footage played, the other cast members compared Reyes’ role to Sarah Connor in the original Terminator, suggesting that she’ll be a mild-mannered protagonist who just happens to be vitally important to the future of humanity.

2. Sarah Connor Has a New Sidekick, and She Might Be a Terminator

Reyes went on to reveal even more about the plot of Terminator: Dark Fate, telling the crowd, “We get these two women, Linda and Mackenzie, who are trying to save me.”

Linda, of course, is Linda Hamilton, who returns to the role of Sarah Connor. Mackenzie Davis plays a new character with Terminator-like abilities who claims to be more of an enhanced human. What that means is unclear, but we’re excited to see how Sarah responds to this new melding of human and machine.

1. There’s a Dog in Terminator: Dark Fate

We wouldn’t have considered this a spoiler, but after Reyes revealed that her character has a pet dog named Taco, she immediately panicked and asked, “Is that a spoiler?”

Maybe the dog plays a key role in Dark Fate. Maybe it’s some sort of Terminator dog? Or maybe it’s just a cute pup. We’ll just have to wait and find out.

Terminator: Dark Fate hits theaters on November 1, 2019.
