Avengers Square Enix Release Date, Trailer, Plot for Marvel's New Game

We’re off to the races with E3 2019 delivering more gaming news than we know what to do with. Among the most exciting game announcements was the trailer reveal and presentation for Marvel’s Avengers, developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal with Marvel Entertainment and Square Enix.

The game is a result of the deal struck between Marvel and Square Enix back in 2017 — and will likely be the first of many games to result from this partnership. Our first look at the game was supposed to arrive at E3 2018, but no such luck. Instead, E3 2019 is the first time the public is able to get a good look at the game — and it’s been interesting, to say the least.

The first cinematic trailer was released during Square Enix’s presentation, giving fans all of the backstory necessary to help set up the dramatic story at the heart of the new Avengers story. Reactions to the trailer were mixed, with fans thrown by the voice performances and look of the Avengers (likely because the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s take on the characters is so ingrained in everyone’s mind) and other fans picking apart the art design of the game.

There may be reservations about Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers right now but there’s still reason to get excited. Here’s everything we know about the new game from Marvel and Square Enix.

When Is the Square Enix Marvel’s Avengers Game Release Date?

According to the Square Enix site, Marvel’s Avengers will be released on May 15, 2020.

Is There a Trailer For the Square Enix Marvel’s Avengers Game?

A cinematic trailer premiered at E3 2019 on Monday, June 10 during the Square Enix presentation. The trailer, titled “A-Day”, ran a little over three minutes and featured an unknown female narrator telling and showing us the backstory that sets up Marvel’s Avengers. We’re also introduced to the playable characters — all Avengers team members — and teased the villains, battles, and the gameplay as a service game. Watch it at the top of this page.

What Is the Plot For Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers Game?

As seen in the trailer, Marvel’s Avengers lays out a new Avengers-focused story for players. In the near future, an Avengers celebration called “Avengers Day” (A-Day) takes place in San Francisco, allowing the public to connect with the Avengers they know and love. A sudden attack on the Golden Gate Bridge forces the Avengers to ditch the event and spring into action. While Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Black Widow go to work saving civilians on the bridge, Captain America returns to the Avengers Helicarrier to fight off baddies trying to gain possession of an experimental energy source in the Avengers’ possession. The Avengers watch as the Helicarrier explodes and sinks into the water after Cap tries to get to the reactor powering the airship.

Taking a cue from Captain America: Civil War, it turns out the Avengers have been set up to look like the ones who staged the attack on the bridge and the Helicarrier. This leads to Avengers being outlawed, stripped of any official standing, and shunted off into the shadows, forbidden to use their powers to save the day. Of course, they will get back into action as they realize they need to figure out who was behind the attack and how they can stop ‘em.

Which Marvel Heroes & Villains Are Featured in Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers Game?

The trailer promises the following Avengers will be front, center, and will probably be playable characters:

  • Captain America
  • Iron Man
  • Black Widow
  • The Hulk
  • Thor

Additionally, a few characters were teased from featured cut scenes who will likely not be playable but will interact with players throughout the game. They are:

  • Hank Pym
  • Abomination
  • Taskmaster

There will no doubt be more villains other than Abomination and Taskmaster involved in Marvel’s Avengers considering this is a service game with the potential for new DLC material to be released in the near future. Will Hawkeye ever show up? We have no idea.

Does Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers Game Tie In to Avengers: Endgame?

As far as we can tell from the trailer and Marvel and Square Enix’s presentation of Marvel’s Avengers at E3, there are no blatant connections to any MCU stories, past, present, or future, including Avengers: Endgame. Certain elements of the story feel reminiscent of past MCU movies, like the Avengers being lawfully sequestered away after the battle in San Francisco, which recalls the Civil War storyline.

Although there are no direct tie-ins to the MCU, you can expect to be reminded of plot points or see familiar characters pop up as the game unfolds.

Does Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers Game Tie In to Spider-Man For PS4?

Fans quickly picked up on the possibility of Marvel’s Avengers and PS4’s Spider-Man existing within the same universe thanks to a bit of key dialogue spoken in the Spider-Man game. During the game, players have the opportunity to take a picture of Stark Tower in Manhattan, prompting Spider-Man to remark, “Avengers Tower, so cool! Too bad they’re never around to use it. They’re on the west coast or something. Probably surfing.” The fact that the “A-Day” trailer shows all of the Avengers based out of San Francisco suggests this could be a shared video game universe.

There has been no official confirmation the games exist in a shared universe and it’s hard to imagine they would if only because the games are created and distributed by different companies. Marvel’s Avengers is the result of collaboration between Crystal Dynamics, Marvel Entertainment, and Square Enix. Meanwhile, Spider-Man was developed by Insomniac Games and Sony Entertainment.

Even if there’s no official tie-in, it’s certainly interesting to think about, right?
