'Game of Thrones' Season 8: Sansa Bends the Knee to Daenerys in New Footage

Things are looking tense at Winterfell these days, but it appears that Sansa Stark will bend the knee — metaphorically, at least — to Daenerys Targaryen. New footage from Game of Thrones Season 8 shows their tense meeting, but how long might her loyalties to the Dragon Queen last?

During the 76th Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, HBO released a sizzle reel of its 2019 programming slate, including big releases like True Detective Season 3, Big Little Lies Season 2, and, of course, the long-awaited final Game of Thrones season.

It included a brand-new scene from Season 8, but it’s an incredibly short follow-up to the clip released back in August 2018 of Jon and Sansa reuniting at Winterfell. They shared a warm embrace then, but in this new scene, Jon presents Daenerys Targaryen to his sister, giving us the first time these major female leaders meet.

With plenty of annoyance, Sansa looks disdainfully at Daenerys but says, “Winterfell is yours, your Grace.” To call the moment tense is an understatement. It’s likely a prelude to an entire season of simmering resentment between the two characters.

Game of Thrones Season 7 detailed a growing long-distance rift between the siblings as Jon allied himself with Dany while Sansa endured criticism from the Northern lords as a result. Many in the North would rather maintain their independence that they gained during the War of the Five Kings, but whether they like it or not, Jon Snow is Lord of Winterfell and he pledged himself to Dany.

So no matter who proclaims him King in the North, that’s not really the case anymore. Sansa graciously welcoming Daenerys to Winterful is largely a required formality that respects the political hierarchy, but there’s no telling what her dynamic might look like now that all of the surviving Starks have reunited.

The eighth and final Game of Thrones season debuts on HBO in April 2019.
