Everything You Need to Know About 'On My Block' Season 2

Who will survive after that major cliffhanger?

As soon as the On My Block Season 1 finale ended, we knew we needed more. The series couldn’t just end with characters’ lives hanging in the balance. Luckily, Netflix renewed it for a Season 2. The coming of age comedy will be back for more. But when will it return, and who will be returning?

Here’s everything we know about what’s coming up On My Block Season 2, including production dates and speculation about when to expect its release date and the first trailer.

Spoilers for On My Block Season 1 below.

What Happened at the End of On My Block Season 1?

On My Block was created by Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft and stars Diego Tinoco, Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, Jessica Marie Garcia, and Ronnie Hawk.

In the first season, we met four friends trying to navigate their teenage years, heartbreak, and gang violence in LA’s South Central neighborhood.

Olivia’s quinceañera ends tragically when it becomes the site of gang violence. Though the concern is for Cesar, a member of the Santos gang, it’s Ruby who is shot as he tries to protect Olivia.

However, when the bullet exits his body, it enters hers. Both Ruby and Olivia are left bleeding on the ground as they wait for the ambulance and the season ends. It doesn’t look good for Ruby in particular. That’s where Season 2 will presumably pick up.

When Is the On My Block Season 2 Release Date?

The series was renewed for a second season in April, about a month after Season 1 debuted.

The cast announced the start of production of Season 2 in October with a video posted to one of Netflix’s official Twitter accounts.

Then, on November 29, Jessica Marie Garcia posted a video to Twitter with Capri announcing that they’d wrapped filming Season 2.

Based on these updates, it certainly seems like Season 2 could be released around the same time of the year as the first season (March), but at the very least you can expect new episodes sometime in 2019.

When Will a Season 2 Trailer Be Released?

Netflix released the official trailer for Season 1 on January 30, about a month and a half before the episodes dropped. It’s likely the same will be true for Season 2’s trailer.

That means you should be able to predict when we’ll get that video once we know the Season 2 release date. However, it is possible that since On My Block has already aired its first season and is popular that we could get a teaser before the actual trailer.

The series was at the top of Netflix’s list of “The Shows We Fell in Binge with This Year” in 2018, which comprised of the “Netflix series released between January 1 and November 28, 2018 with the highest average watch time per viewing session.”

How Many Episodes Will There Be in Season 2?

Like Season 1, there will be 10 episodes, as revealed in an Instagram post from the show’s writers.

What’s the Season 2 Plot?

There are several Season 1 threads that need to be addressed in Season 2.

Despite orders, Cesar wasn’t able to kill Latrelle, who was the one who shot Ruby and Olivia. “He’s going to get disciplined,” Iungerich said when breaking down the finale for TV Guide. “Oscar loves his brother but he can’t let his brother get away with bucking orders.”

As for Ruby’s fate, while it didn’t look like he was going to make it after he took that bullet, don’t assume the worst.

“If we don’t get another season, then I think you know the answer: everyone’s dead,” the creator said in the interview that took place before the Season 2 pickup. So it sounds like Ruby now at least has a chance.

Who Will Return for Season 2?

Ruby and Olivia’s fates are up in the air.

However, redditor u/moonlight_magic noted the absence of Jason Genao, who plays Ruby, from a Snapchat post.

“Did anyone notice in Diego’s (Cesar) Snapchat he’s with Brett (Jamal) filming and how most of them have been excited for filming but Jason has been kind of MIA,” the fan writes. “Diego showed a snap with Brett saying, ‘On set, Jason if you’re watching this, we miss you bud, hopefully I’ll see you’ and it cuts off.”

While the fan worries that means that Ruby won’t be coming back — he could die from his injuries — redditor u/rhiauuou thinks “they’re under strict rules not to show … whoever survives because that would spoil the whole premiere.”

In other words, it might mean nothing, or it could mean that the On My Block cast will be without one of its Season 1 stars in Season 2.

We do know that we’ll be seeing more of Jasmine since Garcia, who was a recurring guest star in Season 1, was promoted to series regular for Season 2, as reported by Deadline in October.

On My Block Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
