CW "Elseworlds" Crossover Trailer Makes Superman a New Villain

A fight is brewing in the newest trailer for the DC television crossover “Elseworlds.” On one side: Heroes of the Arrowverse, including two Flashes, Supergirl, and the Green Arrow. On the other: A dark Superman.

On Sunday, The CW released a new trailer for “Elseworlds,” the 2018 crossover event that will unite Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl (and even 1990’s The Flash CBS show) into one three-part adventure.

The ensemble heroes of Legends of Tomorrow are sitting this year’s crossover out, and Black Lightning remains out of continuity. The crossover begins with Supergirl on December 9.

While the trailer emphasizes many elements that we already know, including a “body switcheroo” for Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen and Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen, the trailer reveals a big battle that pits the heroes against a black suited Superman (Tyler Hoechlin). A year ago, DC fans wanted to see Superman in his black costume in Zack Snyder/Joss Whedon’s Justice League. Now, the Arrowverse is finally giving them their wish.

Meanwhile, something the trailer is conspicuously lacking is Ruby Rose as Batwoman. Earlier this summer, The CW announced that the breakout actor from Orange Is the New Black and John Wick: Chapter 2 would play Kate Kane, the cousin of Bruce Wanye who fights crime as the vigilante superhero Batwoman.

There are some blink-and-you-miss-it shots of Batwoman and the Batsignal, but it’s hard to see in between the quick editing of everything else.

“Elseworlds” premieres December 9 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
