'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' Christmas Special: Season 2 Comes Early

Praise Santa! More 'Sabrina' is hitting Netflix this year.

Halloween was for “Netflix and Chills.” Now the streaming platform is just starting to roll out “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Netflix” for the Winter holiday season. Best of all? Chilling Adventures of Sabrina gets a Christmas special. And you thought you’d have to wait for Season 2.

On Monday, Netflix released a sizzle reel of the many shows and movies, original or otherwise, that’ll be available to stream this Holiday season. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale is one of them. The teaser scenes are very brief, but it’s enough to hold us over for the month until the episode releases.

At the start of the video, Aunt Hilda says to Sabrina, “We’re gonna hunker down and watch our favorite Christmas movies.” And later, at about the 0:42 mark, Sabrina sits by the fire sipping what looks like mulled cider with her two aunts, cousin Ambrose, and Ambrose’s boyfriend Luke. In both scenes, Sabrina sports her icy white hair, so this definitely takes place after Episode 10 when she defeats the Greendale 13 and signs the Book of the Beast.

According to an official release from Netflix, the special episode explores yet another magical holiday in witch culture, during which “families gather together around the Yule Fire to sing pagan carols, tell ghost stories and huddle against the supernatural creatures that come out to cause mischief.”

Because the Winter Solstice is the longest night of the year, it’s also “when the veil between this world and the next is at its thinnest” and therefore “the perfect time to conduct a séance.” As such, Sabrina uses the opportunity to try contacting her mother, whom she last saw in mortal Purgatory.

Unlike how the witch version of Thanksgiving involved extreme cannibalism, it sounds like the Church of Night’s annual winter solstice event is a little bit closer to what the mortals do.

A Midwinter’s Tale will be the eleventh episode of Sabrina, meaning that there are nine episodes remaining in the 20 episodes originally ordered by Netflix. What’s ostensibly Season 2 is also sort of just a continuation of everything we’ve already seen, so A Midwinter’s Tale should be a nice interim episode that bridges the gap between this winter and whenever more episodes drop sometime in 2019.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale will be available to stream on Netflix on Friday, December 14.
