DJ Mustard Goes EDM

It's bad.

DJ Mustard recently released 10 Summers: The Mixtape Vol. 1, a strong tape with few big names; instead, Mustard further defines his post-hyphy Bay aesthetic that makes most capable MCs sound like stars.

This morning, Mustard posted a brand new song to his SoundCloud, “Why’d You Call?,” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and iLoveMakonnen. It sounds like classic Mustard, until it doesn’t. He goes EDM.

Mustard tries his hand at EDM in the most cliched way. His snare-drum-plus-repeating-vocal-clip drop buildup is textbook and unnatural here. When the drop finally arrives, it sounds like something even DJ Snake decided was too corny. At least Ty$ and Makonnen’s voices sound OK.
