Reddit Uses a Wild Theory to Predict 14 New 'Smash Bros.' Characters

None of them are Waluigi.

Nintendo

In the long wait for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s release there’s been no shortage of leaks, rumors, and speculation about which new characters might help pad out the game’s roster. Thanks to a lack of official news from Nintendo, fans have been letting their imagination run wild for the past month. A recent Reddit post takes the fun to a new extreme, asking players to come up with their own “absurd pattern” to predict what the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster may bring, and in the process fans came up with some interesting new ideas.

Here’s a quick rundown of some of the wilder theories spawned by this Reddit post. But remember that we’re just having fun, and none of this should be taken as fact or even serious speculation.

The Kirby Conjecture

Reddit user DifferentAnon kicked things off a with a theory about whether any new characters from the Kirby series would be joining the game, arguing that based on a pattern of Nintendo adding more Kirby characters every other game we could expect to see three new additions to the roster.

64: Kirby
Melee: No Kirby newcomers
Brawl: 2 Kirby newcomers, Metaknight & Dedede
Sm4sh: No Kirby newcomers
Ultimate: Obviously 3 new Kirby newcomers incoming.

From, there the Smash Bros. Reddit community went wild, coming up with their own absurd patterns that might just reveal Nintendo’s secret plans for the Ultimate roster. The theories range from totally wild

The DK Theory

Another Reddit user spotted a similar pattern in the addition of Donkey Kong characters into the game, arguing that Smash Bros. Ultimate could add exactly one new member of the DK family.

64: Donkey Kong
Melee: No DK newcomers
Brawl: Diddy Kong
Smash 4: No DK newcomers
Ultimate: Dixie Kong, has the ‘DK’ initials, and comes from the DK series, and there wasn’t a new DK rep in the last game.

Sounds great, though rumor has it Nintendo could also introduce DK villain King K. Rool in Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The Lego Hypothesis

Here’s a totally ridiculous theory with some interesting ramifications. First, check out the “absurd pattern,” which has to do with new video game worlds introduced to Smash Bros. and the first letter of their names.

Every Smash has introduced universes whose names begin with a letter that hasn’t begun any preceding universe in Smash.
Smash 64: Donkey Kong, Earthbound, F-Zero, Kirby, Mario, Pokemon, Star Fox, The Legend of Zelda, Yoshi
Melee: Ice Climbers, Game and Watch
Brawl: Animal Crossing, Nintendo DS, R.O.B., Wario
Smash 4: Balloon Fight, Xenoblade
Obviously, the amounts are mirrored with Brawl as the mirror point. This means we’ll be getting 9 new universes that’ll round out the whole alphabet: one each beginning with C, H, J, L, O, Q, U, V, and Z! Get your theory hats on, it’s clearly meant for us to dig into!

In response, another Redditor chimed in ago with a list of franchises that fit the remaining letters. There’s some interesting options here, including Chidi-Robo, Quake, Octopath Traveler, and Viewtiful Joe. But the most interesting of all is Lego.

It might sound crazy, but there have been plenty of Lego video games in the past. Bringing a Lego character to Super Smash Bros. could introduce some interesting new game mechanics too, especially if it also meant a new Lego-inspired stage.

Sword Speculation

Finally, here’s another absurd Smash pattern from the same thread that’s all about characters with sword.

64: 1 sword character
Melee: 4
Brawl: 5
Sm4sh: 9 (not including mii fighters)
Pattern: +3 +1 +4 +1 +5 +1…
Ultimate: one more swordsperson and Smash 6 will have 15 apparently)

It’s an interesting theory, though that doesn’t make it any less ridiculous. Just like all the other absurd patterns we covered, and some of the even weirder ones shared on Reddit, this is just another fun way to pass the time until Super Smash Bros. Ultimate actually arrives later this year.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches on December 7 for Nintendo Switch.
