Back in July 2017, we learned that Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon was working on an adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Sirens of Titan. Since then, it’s been radio silence on what sounds like a pretty awesome sci-fi series…. Now, almost a full year later, we finally have an update and it’s pretty exciting.
The news comes from GQ’s sprawling Dan Harmon profile, which mostly focuses on how difficult it is to create an extremely popular show and deal with a, let’s say, passionate fan base. But during the interview, Harmon is also hard at work on the script for Sirens of Titan, offering both a glimpse into his writing process and a much-needed update on the fate of the series.
“And there is today’s ordeal, a limited-series adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s The Sirens of Titan, which has sat dormant more or less since it was announced in 2017. Harmon’s racing to produce a script by tonight, before he lets everyone down again. We had activities planned, but Harmon needs to work. Was I just supposed to watch him write, or…?”
Unfortunately, we don’t get any sort of sense of how Harmon is adapting the book, when it will come out, or even what network it will be on, but we do get to hear a response to the script from one of the show’s producers.
“I was quite impressed and thrilled,” the unnamed producer writes in a message to Harmon. “I really felt you guys handled this masterfully.”
That’s it, and, for now, that will have to do. Considering that the script was only recently completed, and will probably still go through some rewrites, it could be a while before Sirens of Titan is cast, filmed, and released. The fact that Harmon is currently locked into a deal to make 70 more episodes of Rick and Morty doesn’t help either.
Still, for any die hard Vonnegut fans out there, this is great news. The series is still happening, and, even better, the script is finished. Now we’ll just have to sit tight and wait for another update.
In the meantime, if you’re hungry for more info you could always read (or re-read) the actual book. Like a lot of Vonnegut’s work, the story of Sirens of Titan isn’t exactly easy to explain. The plot involves time travel, space exploration, and a Martian invasion of Earth, while raising some interesting questions about free will. The book also turned up in a recent episode of Westworld, so reading it might just help you unravel the mystery of the show’s second season as well.
