'Deadpool 2' Spoilers: The X-Force Twist Was a Huge Troll, Always the Plan

"It’s Deadpool reaching from beyond the screen to trick you."

You know how there were so many trailers and commercials for Deadpool 2 that focused on the Merc’s new superteam, the X-Force? And How the X-Force are supposed to get their own movie after this? Well, uh, funny story.

This post totally spoils Deadpool 2’s big twist.

So, Deadpool recruits the X-Force, a new team consisting of Domino (Zazie Beetz), Shatterstar (Lewis Tan), Bedlam (Terry Crews), Zeitgeist (Bill Skarsgard), Peter W. (Rob Delaney), and Vanish (Brad Pitt in an amazing cameo). The next scene has Deadpool and the team leap from a helicopter and skydive to the ground in a daring rescue mission, despite warnings of strong, strong winds. Deadpool and Domino manage to land safely, but everybody else straight-up dies.

Bedlam gets hit by a bus, Shatterstar flys into spinning helicopter blades, and Vanish gets electrocuted on some power lines. Peter W. manages to land safely, but when he tries to pull Zeitgeist out of a woodchipper, the acid-spitting mutant pukes on Peter and dissolves him. The entire scene is totally unexpected, especially given how much Fox hyped-up the X-Force as the next big team.

Killing them was always part of the plan, though. Deadpool 2’s director, David Leitch, told Inverse that the team’s death was “in the first draft of the script I received.”

“There was a lot of discussion about how it was going to go down, but those pages were redacted from the script and nobody knew what we were shooting or why,” Leitch explained.

Although Leitch is an action director who says he would’ve enjoyed filming a fight scene involving the X-Force, he said the joke was too good to pass up.

“It’s sort of like performance art,” Leitch said. “We have this plan to subvert them in the trailers and make them part of a campaign and build up the expectation and just pull the rug out from the audience. It’s Deadpool reaching from beyond the screen to trick you. It’s fascinating to me as another extension of the film.”

Well, not for long.

Deadpool manages to get his hands on a time-traveling device in the post-credits scene, and uses it to save Peter’s life, but it’s unclear if any of the other X-Force characters were saved. Maybe we’ll never see them again after this massive fake out.

Deadpool 2 is now in theaters.
