Most Fans Got a Book Question Wrong for the 'Ready Player One' HQ Trivia

A question about a book, inside another book.

Enjoying both the film version and book version of Ready Player One requires you to understand at least a portion of the various pop-culture references. Still, no one can be expected to get all of the shout-outs. But last week, it turns out that a large majority of fans who played the Ready Player One-themed round of HQ Trivia missed a question about the book, which, in turn, referenced another book. both the film version and book version of Ready Player One requires you to understand at least a portion of the various pop-culture references. Still, no one can be expected to get all of the shout-outs. But last week, it turns out that a large majority of fans who played the Ready Player One-themed round of HQ Trivia missed a question about the book, which, in turn, referenced another book.

People who loved Ready Player One might be able to rattle off the video game references or identify the easter eggs to other films, but what about novels? During a record-setting round of HQ Trivia, 2.38 Million players competed for a jackpot of $250,000 bucks. But according to sources at HQ Trivia, it looks like a lot of those people would have had a better chance if they liked novels a little more than they liked video games. The second most “savage” question, which was answered incorrectly by 203,210 people was this: In the book “Ready Player One,” the hero’s spacecraft is named after the author of what novel?

If you already know the answer, bravo, you would have made it past this — apparently — difficult question. But, it was multiple choice. The options were: The Shining, A Scanner Darkly, or Breakfast of Champions. This means the correct answer to the question would mean Wade Watts named his spaceship either King, Dick, or Vonnegut, since those are the respective authors of those novels.

Even if you haven’t read those books, or read Ready Player One, or forgot about the fact that Wade named his Firefly ship after one of those authors, you could easily rule out A Scanner Darkly, because as great as Philip K. Dick and A Scanner Darkly is, nobody names their cool spaceship “Dick.” Similarly, no one would name their spaceship “King,” either, cause it just sounds funny. The correct answer is obviously, Breakfast of Champions, which, according to HQ Trivia, 59,967 people got right.

HQ Trivia has never done a branded crossover event like this before, but because talking about Ready Player One is mostly just talking about the references, it was probably the perfect book/film for the popular app. Perhaps no other book on the face of the planet has as much trivia inside of it.

Either way, those people who got the Kurt Vonnegut question wrong are probably kicking themselves. In the film version of Ready Player One, Wade makes it sound like people should spend some more time doing stuff in real life. But maybe, they should read some books, too.
