‘Captain Marvel’ May Have Found Its Villain

Marvel Comics / Lucasfilm

With Thor: Ragnarok about to come out, and Black Panther and Infinity War around the corner, there’s not too much concrete info about what to expect from Captain Marvel’s MCU debut in 2019. But, a new report claims that the studio knows who Brie Larson will face off against in the upcoming film — Rogue One baddie Ben Mendelsohn.

Variety reports that Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are in talks with the 48-year-old actor to play the film’s central villain. Chances are, Mendelsohn would play the leader of the Skrull aliens. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that Captain Marvel, which is set in the ‘90s, would feature Marvel’s classic alien invaders while at San Diego Comic-Con. Skrulls are normally green, with pointy ears and wrinkled chins, so Mendelsohn would likely be under heavy makeup — for part of the role. The Skrull’s whole shtick is that they can shape change, so expect to see some of the actor’s actual face at some point in the movie.

Marvel had no official comment on the casting rumor when Variety reached out.

Mendelsohn was terrific as the Empire’s slimy company man Orson Krennic in Rogue One, but he’s also won acclaim for his role in Netflix’s Bloodline. He’s slotted to appear in the upcoming Ready Player One.

Captain Marvel is scheduled for a March 8, 2019 release date.
