'Honest Trailers' Makes a Very Good Point About the MCU

Turns out, 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' did something huge.

Since 2008, Marvel Studios has released sixteen films (and counting) and six TV shows (and counting), and yet, have there been any significant character deaths? Like, really significant ones? It’s a point that Honest Trailers makes in its latest installment, which spoofs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, available now on Digital HD. Among some of its burns, Honest Trailers stumbles upon the revelation that of all the “deaths” in he MCU, it’s Yondu’s death that’s been the most important “by default.”

About halfway through its newest episode, Honest Trailers describes Yondu (Michael Rooker) as “retconned into a good guy” who “just wanted to be a good papi.” That’s when Honest Trailers said it was a sneaky move on the part of director James Gunn to create “maximum emotional impact” when Yondu is killed. It’s the most tragic Marvel movie death since, well, ever.

In looking at all the major characters who have died, nearly all of them have either come back or weren’t important enough to return anyway. Bucky? Came back. Groot? Came back. Loki? Twice, he came back. Nick Fury? He definitely came back. Agent Coulson? He came back in his own TV show. Peggy Carter? “She was in her ‘90s,” they joke. The Ancient One? Pfft. About the closest significant death is Quicksilver at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron. And that being a Joss Whedon movie, you knew it was going to happen.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is available now on Digital HD. It will be available on Blu-ray on August 22.
