Luke Skywalker Will Hang Out With Alien Nuns in 'The Last Jedi'

This article has been updated.

In addition to living with cute creatures called Porgs and hanging out with Rey, Luke Skywalker is sharing his island with some other mysterious Force-sensitive beings. But what are they?

On Wednesday, Entertainment Weekly announced their cover story featuring deep-dives in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Reporter Anthony Breznican mentions that the coverage will avoid spoilers, but he drops a huge new detail about creatures that are hanging around with Luke on the planet Ahch-to. According to Breznican, there are different things on the island hanging out with Luke.

Here’s the quote from Entertainment Weekly:

We’ll get a new look at some of the creatures who inhabit this Force-sensitive temple alongside Skywalker. (And we don’t just mean the penguin-like Porgs.) As Yoda would say, “No … there is another.”

And those other creatures have now been revealed to be the Caretakers of Ahch-To, which director Rian Johnson has described as “alien nuns.”

The "alien nuns" from 'The Last Jedi'

The Caretakers of Ahch-To are said to tend to the ancient Jedi structures on the planet. Seemingly, this means these creatures predate Jedi knowledge from way before the prequels. Maybe these little nuns are also responsible for tending to those super old books, which were glimpsed briefly in the trailer.

In any case, just the existence of the Caretakers of Ahch-To is a Star Wars canon shake-up. We’ve never heard of these nuns before, and their powers are somewhat unclear. Do they have the Force? Or are they similar to the Guardians of the Whills, like Chirrut Imwe from Rogue One?

In any case, it’s safe to say when Rey landed on this planet in The Force Awakens, no one expected her to eventually meet tiny Force nuns. No one expects space nuns!

Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi, now with more alien nuns, hits theaters on December 15.
