'The Lego Ninjago Movie' Looks Fine Without Lego Batman

The theatrical LEGO movies have been on a hot streak with 2014’s The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie released earlier this year. But prospects for The Lego Ninjago Movie, which will be released on September 22, seemed somewhat lofty. Although the movie is sure to be popular with kids thanks to Lego’s original Ninjago franchise, it didn’t seem to have enough appeal to adults (No Batman?) to make the film truly for all ages. But those doubts should be put to rest with the latest trailer, which doubles down on both its emotional stakes and outrageous comedy.

In The Lego Ninjago Movie, a young Master Builder named Lloyd (Dave Franco) lives a double life as a high school student and as a heroic ninja known as the Green Ninja. Along with his best friends and guidance from Master Wu (Jackie Chan), Lloyd must confront the evil Garmadon (Justin Theroux), who also happens to be his father.

In addition to Franco, Chan, and Theroux, The Lego Ninjago Movie has an all-star voice cast including Olivia Munn (The Newsroom), Michael Peña (Ant-Man), Fred Armisen (Portlandia), Abbi Jacobson (Broad City), and Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick). Since the Lego movies appear to exist in their own continuities, don’t expect Will Arnett’s amazing Lego Batman to show up, although really, who can guess with these wild movies?

The Lego Ninjago Movie will be released on September 22.
