'Deadpool' Writers Still Regret Cutting Brutal Deleted Scene

Hollywood’s new golden superhero, Deadpool, is in the unlikely race to the Oscars. The awards season kicked off a press tour during which the filmmakers have opened up about the Marvel movie that almost wasn’t. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick recently talked about the film’s notorious deleted scene, set in Mexico, admitting that if it were up to them, it’d still be in the final theatrical cut.

In a five-minute scene, Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) and Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) travel to Guadalajara for a miraculous treatment to cure Wade’s terminal cancer. Wade discovers the doctor is a hack, and in a harshly-lit scene resembling a horror movie, Wade kills him for cheating and tricking good people.

The scene, which Wernick admits he “fought like crazy for,” was cut because its dark, bleak tone did not fit the rest of the film, which could be categorized as a sincerely violent rom-com.

“I loved it so much and it didn’t make the cut just because … the movie got dark for a long period of time in that space and it felt like that scene could come out without losing story,” says Wernick. “I would have put that back in if it had been my cut.”

There’s another scene that’s less dark, but still sounds awesome, that didn’t make the movie but Wernick hints may be saved for the sequel. In it, Deadpool karaoke sings “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers during “an action sequence where he is kicking major ass.”

Deadpool is a movie where you break all of the rules,” says Wernick on the film’s magic that made it a success last February. “You can do things that you couldn’t do in any other movie.”

The Mexico scene, dubbed “Cancer World Tour,” can be seen on the film’s Blu-ray release. You can also watch it below.
