Rey Parentage Questions Complicated by 'Star Wars Rebels'

If Rey is related to Obi-Wan Kenobi, then the missing link between her and old Ben could be hiding on Star Wars Rebels.

Writing for Moviepilot, C.S. O’Donnell noticed a striking connection between Rebels Mandalorian warrior Sabine Wren and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Specifically, that in “Visions and Voices” (the latest episode of Rebels) a callback to Obi-Wan Kenobi’s one and only love — the Duchess Satine of Mandalore — came in the form Darth Maul revealing he still had weapon with which he murdered Satine: the Darksaber.

So, how does that possibly connect to Rey from The Force Awakens? It’s a little bit of a Force-leap, but the thought is this: Sabine is a Mandalorian warrior who fights for the Rebels. She’s good with weapons and wielding the Darksaber. And because she is from Mandalore — and we don’t know who her parents are — it’s conceivable she is the secret baby of Obi-Wan and Satine. (If true, her name is even similar to her mom’s.)

Sabine, a part of the Kenobi family?

This theoretically connects to Rey because if she is related to Obi-Wan, Sabine would now be a good candidate for Rey’s mother. As O’Donnell points out “Star Wars films love hiding children away.”

Still, even if Rey is related to Obi-Wan Kenobi, it seems unlikely Episode VIII would make the Sabine connection explicit. Sure, Sabine and her (maybe mother) Satine are technically part of the Star Wars canon, but regular moviegoers — and even some hardcore fans — don’t know about everything that’s happened in the cartoons. This means that even if this particular piece of the Rey parent puzzle turns out to be real, it might be rendered invisible.
