Rita Repulsa is Hunting for Power Rangers on Twitter
After eons in imprisonment, the evil space empress Rita Repulsa is looking for Zordon’s Power Rangers, and she’s using Twitter. During two “takeovers” of the Power Rangers movie accounts, Rita has searched for random teenagers bearing the names of the Power Rangers — Jason, Zack, Trini, Kimberly, and Billy — while also pestering brands and declaring herself Team Edward. You know, from Twilight? Hey, it’s hard to keep up on what the youths like when you’re floating in space.
After an initial takeover on November 28, Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) returned on the morning of December 8 with the hashtag #RitaTakesOver, posting a new image of herself carrying her magic wand which definitely has the Green Ranger’s power coin. “Thought you saw the last of me!? Ignoramus, you thought wrong. I have glorious catastrophic plans for the holiday season,” she announced.
This is essentially what Rita is doing right now.
Peruse the earlier #RitaTakesOver from late November and you’ll see some rather kooky and funny stuff. Besides bugging brands like Krispy Kreme, Oprah, UberEATS, and previous Lionsgate movie franchises like Twilight and The Hunger Games (a previous franchise Banks starred in), Rita also does a Twitter search for teens named Jason and Zack, realizing that they’re not the teenagers with attitude she’s looking for.
The whole invasion is fun and weird, and exactly the kind of humor fans expect from a Power Rangers movie. She even challenges a lil’ baby Ranger, a fan’s little brother dressed as the Blue Dino Charge Ranger for Halloween.
And, though it’s a little dated, it’s fun to know Rita is adamant about being on #TeamEdward. Gotta admire her resilience.
