The New 'Legends of Tomorrow' Costumes Look Retro-Perfect

The CW

It’s getting crowded in the Arrowverse. The Justice Society of America, a legion of superheroes from a bygone era, will team up with the heroes in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. New photos from the CW give a glimpse at the JSA assembled in their glory with their costumes — a stylish mix of retro futurism and gritty modernism — giving the Justice Society a look as classic as a Silver Age comic while still being sleek and functional.

This season, the Legends and the JSA will combat the Legion of Doom, an evil alliance between Malcolm Merlyn, Damien Darhk, the Reverse-Flash, and Captain Cold. That’s where the Justice Society of America comes in, who will at first refuse help from Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) and his ragtag crew of Atom (Brandon Routh), Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell), White Canary (Caity Lotz), and Firestorm (Franz Drameh and Victor Garber).

The JSA in this universe are made up of Hourman (Patrick J. Adams), Citizen Steel (Nick Zano), Obsidian (Dan Payne), Stargirl (Sarah Grey), Dr. Mid-Nite (Kwesi Ameyaw), and Vixen (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), who is in fact the grandmother of the Vixen seen in Arrow last season and in her animated web series.

The plot summary, provided by the CW, reveals friction between the Legends and the JSA when the former travel to Nazi-occupied France during World War II. Rip Hunter is (temporarily) absent, leaving leadership of the Legends up for grabs; Professor Stein and Sara compete for the position.

Below are CW’s photos of the JSA, looking like they’ve stepped right out of an old comic. This look has been long missing in the very modern DC shows. From left to right: Stargirl, Dr. Mid-Nite, Hourman, Obsidian, Vixen, and Citizen Steel.

And this next photo features Stargirl and Obsidian. Lance Henriksen, who will portray an older version of Obsidian, confirmed that Obsidian is indeed the son of Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern.

Now we have a closer photo of Rex Tyler, aka Hourman, looking positively smoldering in what is probably a dramatic beat during the tension between the JSA and the Legends.

Hey look: The JSA has an HQ complete with a center table! They really do look old school, and their HQ is all oak wood with retro tech. The photo below comes from the first real meeting between the JSA and the Legends of Tomorrow: That’s Sara, Ray, and Rory all in the foreground.

Here’s Citizen Steel and Vixen, looking fierce in their spandex-leather outfits. Citizen Steel looks like an old G.I. Joe figure, while Vixen is sporting the same outfit her granddaughter wore in Arrow.

Here’s Vixen, again, with Dr. Mid-Nite in Nazi-occupied France. It is unknown which of the three Dr. Mid-Nites Ameyaw is portraying. He may be a rewritten version of Beth Chapel, the daughter of a South Carolina pastor, or Charles McNider, who fought in World War II which is the setting of the JSA in Legends of Tomorrow. They could even borrow aspects of the third Dr. Mid-Nite, Pieter Cross, who had a brief relationship with the Black Canary. Since Sara is single again and left behind Nurse Lindsay, she may be up for another fling.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow returns for its second season October 13 on the CW.
