Hardware performance is the invisible force behind the digital world. From powering AI workloads in the cloud and enabling seamless mobile experiences to supporting cutting-edge gaming, optimized hardware is at the core of innovation. As computational demands rise, engineers face the pressing challenge of balancing the need for raw power with efficiency and sustainability.

Ananya Pareek is an experienced engineer with a background in hardware architecture, performance, and software co-design who has contributed to some of the world’s most advanced computer systems.

The Journey To Expertise

“The primary factor that inspired me to pursue this career was seeing the ubiquity of computer systems and CPUs in the world,” Pareek recalls. “It has had a direct impact on almost all technological advances. As the world changes and computation becomes more demanding, this field keeps adapting and providing the tools to advance our society further technologically and breaking new barriers everywhere from space travel to artificial intelligence to medical and chemical advancements.”

After earning his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Pareek went on to complete a master’s in computer engineering, earning the Frank J. Horton Fellowship during his graduate studies for working on optimizing particle physics simulators.

Following graduation, Pareek worked for industry-leading semiconductor and software companies. “I saw first-hand how much of an impact one can have over a great variety of fields, from artists to movie makers to engineers to scientists. This made me realize the real impact of the career I have chosen and further cemented the passion in me.”

Across his career, he’s worked on a wide range of successful projects, including developing performance models for personal computers at an industry-leading technology brand and working on CPU microarchitecture and GPU shader efficiency at a big-name telecom provider, which had a direct impact on the user experience for the company’s flagship cellular devices.

Currently, Pareek is a performance engineer at a FAANG company, where his focus is on improving the performance and efficiency of upcoming ML models on GPUs.

The Science Of Balance

Engineering hardware systems that deliver high performance while maintaining energy efficiency is very complex. Modern systems must meet the demands of AI, gaming, and cloud computing without overheating, using too much power, or becoming too expensive.

To solve these issues, Pareek has been engineering tools and systems to meet the demands of both software performance and consumer expectations for the majority of his career. He’s developed Python-based tools to analyze and project system behavior, ensuring power-performance targets aligned with thermal and enclosure constraints.

While working at a major telecom provider, Pareek helped develop the brand’s in-house CPUs and GPUs for the brand’s smartphones, contributing critical components that were essential for a successful launch. In his current role, he’s worked on benchmarking and projecting the performance of AI workloads to align hardware roadmaps with performance requirements. This innovation paved the way for next-gen cloud infrastructure.

Mastering the Tools Of The Trade

Becoming a master in any field requires balancing multiple skills. It is this element of performance engineering that most appeals to Pareek: “One of the main challenges of this field itself is being adept at a wide variety of things and understanding how they come together in one place to make them perform better with each generation. I overcame this issue with hard work and passion.”

Pareek’s work in personal computing led to the creation of predictive models that allowed for the simulation and optimization of hardware behavior before physical prototyping. These models were critical for computer chip evolution and helping products meet performance benchmarks.

During his time at a major telecom provider, Pareek developed tools for CPU and GPU performance analysis that revealed structural inefficiencies, which allowed for further improvement in flagship products.

With a strong belief in holistic solutions and an uncanny ability to analyze the little things as well as the big picture, Pareek has inspired and led his teams to success everywhere he has worked.

The Vision For A Stronger Tomorrow

Pareek envisions a future where hardware engineers not only push the limits of performance but also prioritize sustainability and energy efficiency in every design. Emerging fields like quantum computing, AI, and green tech stand to benefit from the principles he champions in performance engineering.

Beyond his technical contributions, Pareek is committed to mentoring the next generation of engineers, ensuring a legacy of innovation and impact.

Hardware performance engineering may not be as visible as the software applications it supports, but it is the backbone of technological progress. By sharing his expertise and vision, Ananya Pareek offers a glimpse into the work that is shaping the future of the digital world and the importance of balancing power, efficiency, and sustainability.
