Lamborghini Debuts Urus, Its First SUV, and It Looks Stunning

Lamborghini

Lamborghini is joining the sports utility vehicle race. The Urus, unveiled on Monday, brings high performance to a vehicle designed for all manner of challenges. Its sports car-inspired design makes it look like a vehicle from the future, and the company has given it a new name: the Super SUV.

“The Urus elevates the SUV to a level not previously possible, the Super SUV,” says Stefano Domenicali, Automobili Lamborghini chairman and CEO. “It is a true Lamborghini in terms of design, performance, driving dynamics and emotion as well as drivable every day in a range of environments.”

Lamborghini did not skimp on the specs. With a top speed of 190 mph, the company has billed this as the fastest SUV available when it arrives next spring. Its four-wheel drive system is paired with carbon ceramic brakes, adaptive air suspension and active roll stabilization to increase interior comfort. Its weight-to-power ratio is unparalleled at 3.38kg/hp. It features six driving modes: Strada, Sport, and Corsa, for increasingly performance-oriented driving experiences, Neve for snow driving, Terra for off-road, and Sabbia for sand.

The design is inspired by the lines seen on a typical Lamborghini sports car, with a rear diffuser inspired by the company’s racing vehicles, and a slimmer middle offsetting the front and rear.

Although it reads like a laundry list of high-performance features, its 4.0 liter V8 twin-turbo engine places it firmly in the non-electric camp.

A video shared by Tesla CEO Elon Musk last week showed the all-electric 2016 Model X edge out the 2017 Bentley Bentayga in a quarter-mile race. However, the Urus’ acceleration time of 0-60 in 3.6 seconds suggests it will give these performance-focused SUVs a run for their money in real-world performance.

“The Urus fits perfectly within the Lamborghini family as a high performance car,” Domenicali says. “It is the culmination of intensive development and passionate skill to create a new breed of bull: a Super SUV that transcends the boundaries of expectations and opens the door to new possibilities, for both our brand and our customers.”

Those looking to purchase the Urus will have to start saving. With a suggested retail price of $200,000 excluding sales tax, the new vehicle is in a similar price range to the upcoming second-generation Tesla Roadster.
