Marvel reveals an iconic villain coming to 'Falcon and the Winter Soldier'

It seems a Cap replacement is on the way.

With filming on Falcon and the Winter Soldier now fully underway, details about the mysterious show are finally starting to trickle out. We know the series will see the return of Daniel Bruhl’s Baron Zemo and recently a fan deduced the show may be returning to Siberia, a prominent setting in Captain America: Civil War. What’s been less clear, so far, is the role that Wyatt Russell’s USAgent will be playing in the show.

USAgent is a character with a complicated history in the world of Marvel comics, one that included a stint as a full-fledged supervillain and later donning the actual Captain America suit as Steve Rogers’ replacement. Coming on the heels of Chris Evans’ final bow as Cap in Avengers: Endgame, it seemed unlikely the character’s MCU debut was unrelated. Now, newly revealed production art from the show seems to confirm that USAgent will be trying to fill some mighty big shoes in Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

USAgent’s costume is aggressively similar to that of Captain America — especially the helmet, which looks to be a direct homage to that worn by Rogers. The logo is also a star-shaped variation on the ‘A’ that has long adorned Steve’s uniform.

You can’t help but look at this and be reminded of USAgent’s villainous origins in the comics. As SuperPatriot, he campaigned to take over the mantle of Captain America with the backing of the US government. Given that the series seems like it will focus on Falcon taking up the mantle of Captain America after the events of Endgame, Russell’s USAgent will likely serve as an antagonist (if not outright villain) angling to take over the title for himself.

Even if USAgent eventually becomes an ally to the Avengers, it looks like he’ll be introduced as a foe initially. We’ll have to wait until next year to find out for sure. For now, it feels safe to say that USAgent won’t be on the side of truth, justice, and the American way when we first meet him.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier is expected to come to Disney+ in late 2020.
