Everything we (don't) know about 'Undone' Season 2

Will the Amazon Prime show return for a sophomore outing?

Undone, Amazon’s dramatic animated series created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy, has attracted a fair share of buzz since its mid-September premiere. The somber, trippy show definitely isn’t for kids, tackling weighty issues like grief and existential crises through the lens of a time-travel narrative. Here’s a primer to everything you need to know about the show, along with our best guesses as to what could come next.

What is ‘Undone’?

Undone utilizes the animation technique known as Rotoscope, which you may recognize it from earlier films like Waking Life or A Scanner Darkly. Undone stars Rosa Salazar and Bob Odenkirk and tells the story of a woman named Alma as she recovers from a car crash. In the aftermath, she’s visited by the ghost of her father (Odenkirk) who tells her that he was murdered and asks for her help in solving the case. What follows is an existential journey that examines heavy subjects such as mental health, trauma, and relationships between family members. There are some engaging and unique sci-fi elements on top of it, but at its core it’s a very human show that deals with emotional truth above all else. It’s a trippy show that deals with some heavy emotional beats and has been met with critical acclaim since premiering.

Will there be an ‘Undone’ Season 2?

As late September, Amazon has yet to order a second season of Undone. As the show premiered very recently, network executives will likely take a few weeks to analyze viewership to determine if the series is worth continuing from a financial and business perspective. The biggest thing Undone has working in its favor is critical acclaim. It’s currently sitting at 100% approval on RottenTomatoes and word of mouth has been strong.

Even so, ScreenRant has observed that the last three Amazon dramedies — Jean-Claude Van Johnson, The Dangerous Book for Boys, and Forever — have only lasted a single season. Undone also falls into this category, which could work against its renewal chances. However, the prospect of jumping around through time to reveal more family secrets yields plenty of storytelling fodder; there’s plenty of possible directions for Alma’s story, or even for a new protagonist with a similar gift.

When could Undone Season 2 premiere on Amazon Prime?

Undone was greenlit for its first season way back in early 2018. It took a full 18 months for the series to be completed and premiere on the streaming service. This is likely due to the fact that Rotoscope animation is a very time-consuming and labor intensive process. This means that even if the second season of the show is greenlit in a timely manner, it’s likely going to be a while before any new episodes premiere. That means late 2020 at the earliest, but more likely sometime in 2021.

Undone is a bold show, one with a unique creative vision and a fresh take on Rotoscope and densely layered themes and ideas. While a second season is far from guaranteed, hopefully the show’s wide acclaim will help propel it to a follow-up season or the wider audience necessary to guarantee one.

Undone Season 1 is available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video.
