'Spider-Man: Far From Home' Spoiler Image in Trailer Teases Iron Man Cameo

Avengers: Endgame ended with a harsh finality for Tony Stark. After all, not even Iron Man could withstand the powers of the Infinity Gauntlet. The likelihood of a full resurrection is slim, but there are other ways for the beloved Avenger to return. Now, an image from the latest Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer suggests Tony could make an appearance in an entirely new form.

Redditor u/lessthanhero32 posted a zoomed-in image from the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer showing Tom Holland’s Peter Parker wearing Tony’s glasses. Upon closer inspection, a reflection of Iron Man’s suit can definitely be seen, but is it really a reflection?

Do you see it?

Don’t see it. Look at those two horizontal bits of white just above Peter’s eye. You can even make out the face plate.

See?

Considering these are Tony Stark’s glasses, they probably have all sorts of futuristic technology built into them. We could be seeing some sort of high-tech HUD display that will guide Peter in a similar way to the data Iron Man saw while flying around in his suit. It might even be an A.I. version of Stark left behind to guide Spider-Man.

Think about the way Stark created Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Tony’s worked a lot with artificial intelligence in the past (JARVIS comes to mind), and even his holographic message at the end of Endgame is advanced tech that could have been created for Tony to live on postmortem. He knew his decision to help the Avengers time travel and defeat Thanos in Endgame was dangerous, so why wouldn’t he create a backup of his own mind?

Tony is always thinking ahead, so ensuring that he’d somehow live on as an A.I. version of himself wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility — it already happened in the comics. This might make his sacrifice ring a bit hollow, though, if that’s the case, especially since it would be like getting half of Tony back. Still, knowing what he’s capable of and how heavily A.I. technology has been featured in the MCU, it’s definitely possible.

A less exciting (but probably more likely) explanation is that Tony simply left behind a pre-recorded message for Peter inside the glasses. That means there’s no Iron Man A.I., just a final goodbye from Spider-Man’s mentor. Or maybe it’s just a reflection.

Regardless, the MCU created a powerful father/son dynamic between the two characters, and Tony was, in many ways, a substitute for Peter’s relationship with Uncle Ben. At the very least, Spider-Man: Far From Home is sure to grapple with Spider-Man’s sense of abandonment in the wake of his mentor’s death.

Based on Peter’s look of surprise in the photo, seeing Iron Man is probably not what he expected after putting on his mentor’s glasses. Even zoomed in, though, the picture isn’t very clear and should be taken with a grain of salt. Either way, though, you can expect Tony Stark’s legacy to loom large in Far From Home, whether the character makes a cameo or not.

Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters July 2, 2019.
