'Avengers: Endgame' Spoilers: Brightened Trailer Reveals Missing Character

Hawkeye may have missed out on the action in Avengers: Infinity War, but he’ll be back in the fight in Avengers: Endgame. Upon closer inspection, the scene of the Avengers marching through headquarters in the second Endgame trailer might possibly reveal Hawkeye as the previously unknown character.

Redditor u/ForceGenius zoomed in on the scene of the team walking in formation through Avengers headquarters. By taking it frame by frame and increasing the brightness, u/ForceGenius claims that it’s actually Hawkeye/Ronin walking behind War Machine. Fans have speculated that the mystery figure might be Bruce Banner, though that’s less plausible. The gaping hole in the middle is most likely Hulk or Captain Marvel (or both) edited out for the sake of spoilers. Though the picture is still blurry despite the zoom and brightness, the most prominent evidence for Hawkeye’s inclusion is his distinct haircut and the character’s height.

Here’s the image in question:

There isn’t a whole lot we know about Hawkeye’s role in Endgame. However, it’s been hinted that the Clint Barton we have come to know transitions into Ronin. In the first Endgame trailer, Ronin is revealed to be in Japan. He’s sporting a new hairdo and his suit has been upgraded to include a hood, a face mask, and a gold-trimmed jacket. Instead of a bow and arrow, his weapon of choice is a katana. The change to Hawkeye’s superhero identity could be chalked up to changes in the timeline, but there’s no way to tell when Hawkeye actually became Ronin. Could it have been in between Avengers: Age of Ultron and Endgame? Is he no longer an archer? In the comics, the alias of Ronin isn’t unique to Clint, though he later adapts the identity to fight alongside the Avengers.

The Super Bowl trailer may also suggests Hawkeye could travel through time to retrieve the Reality Stone based on one image of the character with a red glow across his face. A recent toy leak also hints that he’ll be part of the team that travels back time, likely through the Quantum Realm, since he’s wearing the same special suit as Black Widow, Iron Man, and Ant-Man. However, there’s no telling when in Endgame the scene in the Avengers hangar takes place in Endgame, Hawkeye’s presence makes sense given his return to the team and the potentially large role he’ll play in the plot.

Hawkeye has been largely underutilized in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s a skilled archer who first appeared in Thor and, while a member of the Avengers, has been given less focus when compared to the other heroes. Still, Hawkeye is known as a highly trained agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and marksman. If the katana is any indication, however, taking on the identity of Ronin may mean he’s picked up some new skill sets since Age of Ultron and will use them in the fight against Thanos.

Avengers: Endgame hits theaters April 26, 2019.
