Here's What Playing 'Apex Legends' Actually Costs on PS4, Xbox One, and PC

Plus the exclusive loot you can get on each platform.

Do you need PS Plus to play Apex Legends? Anyone with a PlayStation 4 and some free time this weekend may be asking the same question. After all, EA’s new battle royale game might be free-to-play (aside from the microtransactions), but if you have to pay for online access it’s not exactly free, is it?

Thankfully, similar to other free-to-play titles like Fortnite: Battle Royale, PS Plus isn’t required for Apex Legends, though a subscription to the PlayStation service will get you some perks. Here’s what you need to know about the cost of playing the new Fortnite-killer on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Apex Legends and PS Plus Packs

Like we said above, PS Plus isn’t required to play Apex Legends, but if you’re already paying for the service you’ll be able to redeem a special PS Plus Pack with some special cosmetic items that are exclusive for PS4 players. That includes new skins for two weapons (RE45 and Flatline), banners for two of the game’s characters (Gibraltar and Bloodhound), and more.

Apex Legends and Xbox Live Gold

Unfortunately for Xbox One owners, this is the one platform that requires an online subscription to play Apex Legends. That means you’ll have to sign up for Xbox Live Gold if you haven’t already. The service costs $59.99 for 12 months, $24.99 for three months, and $9.99 for one month.

There’s also some Xbox perks for Apex Legends players, but only if you also pay for EA Access, another subscription service that gets you early access to some games and also includes free downloads to other titles. EA Access costs $4.99 per month or $29.99 for a year, and if you have it you’ll unlock 1,000 Apex Coins, a special badge, a special weapon skin, and more cosmetic items.

Apex Legends on PC

Finally, PC players can check out Apex Legends for free, which shouldn’t come as a surprise for anyone used to gaming on a computer. However, to get that bonus loot you’ll have to sign up for EA’s Origin Access ($4.99 a month or $29.99). Like on Xbox, your reward is 1,000 Apex Coins, a special badge, a special weapon skin, and more cosmetic items.

To be honest, none of these special loot packs are really all that exciting. The best stuff still comes from opening Apex Packs in the game or just buying it directly. Still, if you’re already paying for these online services you might as well claim your prize.

Apex Legends is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
