'Star Wars Episode 9' Trailer Release Date: 'Frozen 2' Teaser May Reveal It

Disney dropped a bombshell this morning with the first official trailer for Frozen 2, but beyond raising a whole bunch of questions about the highly anticipated sequel, there’s one more question this trailer has us asking: What about Star Wars: Episode IX?! After all, at this point, the final entry in the Skywalker saga is the only Disney movie of 2019 without a trailer. So when will it arrive?

To answer that question, I decided to roll up my sleeves and do the math, which might finally reveal when Disney and Lucasfilm plan to unleash our first official look at Star Wars: Episode IX.

Let’s start off with a few key dates. Frozen 2 hits theaters on Friday, November 22, 2019. Star Wars: Episode IX will debut almost exactly a month later on Friday, December 20.

The Frozen 2 trailer arrived on February 13, roughly nine months before the movie’s release. So it stands to reason that the Star Wars: Episode IX trailer will debut about a month from now in mid-March, roughly nine months before that movie hits theaters.

Oh, you want a specific date? Well, how about March 8? That’s when Captain Marvel hits theaters. It’s conceivable that Disney could do a bit of cross-promotion and tease Star Wars: Episode IX with an exclusive trailer that’s only shown in theaters. Then a week later — maybe on Wednesday, March 13 — that same trailer could get a wide release online.

The only wrinkle in this theory is Star Wars Celebration, an annual event where Lucasfilm often reveals new trailers and other big news that’s scheduled for April 11-15. At this point, most fans assume the first Episode IX footage will be revealed then. So a March reveal would come as a pretty huge surprise.

As for what the first Star Wars: Episode IX trailer will reveal, we’re honestly not expecting much. At this point, we’d take an official title and a few quick images of our favorite characters. If Lucasfilm really wants to blow our minds it can even throw in an image of Billy Dee Williams, who’s set to reprise his role as Lando Calrissian. The trailer could also reveal some rumored new looks for our favorite characters, including Rey in her new Jedi robes or Kylo Ren wearing his patched up helmet.

Honestly, though, just the official Star Wars: Episode IX title against a black background would be enough to bring the house down.

**Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20, 2019.
