Why 'Smash Bros. Ultimate' Fans Think the Next DLC Pack Is 'Dragon Quest'

Should you believe the latest leak?

The new “Where is the Avengers 4 trailer?” for the internet is speculating over the next four downloadable content (DLC) packs for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. We already know that the first release will be Persona 5’s Joker, but now there’s a new contender for DLC pack number two. Given the source of the information, however, it’s wise to remain skeptical.

Supporting rumors that Square Enix will introduce a new character to Nintendo’s hit game, an alleged leak suggests the next DLC will be themed after the Dragon Quest series. Erdrick, a mythic figure in Dragon Quest lore and the protagonist of Dragon Quest III on the original NES console, is said to be the new playable fighter in Ultimate.

On Saturday, a post surfaced on the Japanese text forum 5Channel (translated by PersonaCentral) that named Erdrick of Dragon Quest as the next playable fighter. A separate post on GameFAQs by a user named “xenother” also claims Erdrick will be the next DLC pack. But neither 5Channel nor xenother appear to have a history of reputable leaks.

Below is an English translation of the 5Channel post, run through Google. The post names Erdrick as “Lotto,” his original Japanese name.

Is this “leak” legit? Probably not! Few leaks surrounding the Super Smash Bros. series are, but that has never stopped the legions of Smash Bros. fans worldwide from trying to guess Nintendo’s next move. The recent addition Joker from Persona 5, a game exclusive to the PlayStation 4, has also tossed out the rules for who qualifies for the Nintendo series.

The fan service-y nature of the series also lends itself to wishful thinking. Personally, I will never stop pushing for Travis Touchdown of No More Heroes to be in the series.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is out now for the Nintendo Switch.
