'American Horror Story' Season 8 Spoilers: The One Witch Who Won't Return

If American Horror Story Season 8 has proven anything so far, it’s that series creator Ryan Murphy has a soft spot for the witches of Season 3. PLenty of the best characters from the “Coven” have already returned for this crossover season, while others might appear very soon, but there’s at least one witch that we can definitely confirm won’t show up in American Horror Story Season 8. And she’s not happy about.
American Horror Story: Coven featured Angela Bassett as Marie Laveau, a famed Voodoo Queen known throughout New Orleans. Laveau was friends with Fiona Goode at one point, but they begin to feud before Laveau eventually attacked Miss Robichaux’s Academy. Basset’s character was also immortal, and her status in the world of Voodoo practice is equal to that of the Supreme. Basically, she was a badass.
So why isn’t she back on AHS Season 8? Well, it turns out Bassett wants to know too. After all, she might have died in Season 3 of American Horror Story, but that hasn’t stopped Ryan Murphy from bringing back many of the other witches from Coven for this season already.
On Monday, Bassett expressed her disappointment over American Horror Story Season 8 during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“I have [AHS Season 8] on my DVR,” she said, “but I haven’t seen any of it just yet. But I mean, come on. Where’s Marie Laveau? I’m even a little bit in my feelings that Marie didn’t come back.”
Culturess noted that Bassett has been pretty busy working on 9-1-1, another Ryan Murphy show. But Connie Britton was on that show as well, and she’s supposed to appear in AHS: Apocalypse too. So it doesn’t seem like a scheduling conflict was the main issue at play here.
Despite what Basset said, some fans on Reddit still aren’t convinced that her character won’t return eventually.
“I’d be surprised if this isn’t an obvious red herring and she’ll show up,” Reddit user iPhoney said in response to the Hollywood Reporter article.
Another Reddit user, bbspooks wrote on the same thread, “Gotta be honest, I think it’s her sly way of saying Marie is connected to the season in some way. I’m thinking it’s through Dinah. Already mentioned ‘voodoo stuff.’”
Bassett’s remark about Laveau seems definitive, but maybe the greatest twist of all in American Horror Story Season 8 will be that both she and Murphy kept a cameo from the Voodoo Queen under wraps. Stay tuned.
